Reading is Fundamental and fun, even in a Fast-Paced World

As any parent will attest to, reading to children as young as infants can start them off with the right tools to get by in life. Even with all the computer technology at our fingertips, reading books is still a fundamental tool for teaching children how to read, write, comprehend, and have a solid command of the English language. That is essential for success in work and in play.

There is a variety of ways for people to gain access to information they need, or to read about the subjects they are most interested in. The library has always been the favorite place to go for voracious readers.

A new idea in perusing libraries and using all the resources that libraries have to offer, is the same concept as the travelling veterinary clinic, or the medical care mobiles that travel to disadvantaged neighborhoods to treat the poverty-stricken citizens.

A library on wheels that travels to areas, allowing children to partake in a story time session, or to use a computer to look up information on a school project, is the latest on-wheels trend.

One is the Hancock County Public Library’s bookmobile, located in Greenfield, IN, known as “the library’s World on Wheels.  The HCPL Techmobile gives patrons access to the computers and books for children and adults. They also have a wide selection of magazines, CD’s, and DVD’s. The Techmobile makes return visits every three weeks, so readers can enjoy the materials they borrow for three weeks until it rolls around again. The HCPL Techmobile also visits childcare centers. Travelling to the library with a large group of children can be extremely difficulty.

The traveling public library system is a great way for those unable to visit their public library, such as home bound individuals and the disabled. Children and adults who love books are as thrilled to see a library on wheels as they are to hear the ice cream truck coming down the street.
