Top 5 Communications Mistakes

Technology and the internet allow us to communicate in ways that were never possible before. But it also allows us to be rude in ways that were never a problem before.  Here are the 5 biggest mistakes people make while using technology to communicate.

  1. Using the wrong tool to communicate.  For example, texting is not e-mail and the message should not be four pages long. E-mail is a professional tool, chatting not so much.  Facebook is not the place for minute by minute details about yourself.
  2. Revealing too much information.  Anything you put on the internet STAYS on the internet. And not in a good way. Even if you delete a web page or remove a picture, it is still out there somewhere floating around in cyberspace. Be careful what you put out there, you might regret it later when you are looking for a job, get married or have kids.
  3. Not being aware of e-mail etiquette.  DO NOT USE ALL CAPS.  That is the internet version of yelling.  Spell check and use proper grammar and do not use short hand abbreviations like you  might in texting.
  4. Assuming that cell phone texting requires an immediate response back.  If it is an emergency or important information then a follow up text to make sure the person you text received the message is fine. But there is nothing more annoying than someone blowing up your phone with text after text.
  5. Constant spamming.  Junk mail used to just come in the mail box, but technology has created new ways for people to share useless information. Your friends might be glad you found a new favorite television show, but they do not need a link to every episode online.
